The village of Autoire, one of the most beautiful villages in the Lot region
Autoire is a charming French village in the Lot department, just a few kilometres from the L’Eau Vive campsite. Nestled in a stunning natural amphitheatre and framed by dramatic cliffs, it was once affectionately known as the “Little Versailles” and now proudly holds the title of one of France’s most beautiful villages.
With its harmonious scenery, historic buildings and distinctive architecture, Autoire invites visitors to stroll through its picturesque streets, discover ancient castles, and marvel at the famous Autoire waterfall, a spectacular natural highlight not to be missed.

Right at the entrance to the village, two beautiful historic residences greet you as you arrive in this charming corner of the Lot.
The first building, dating back to the 15th century, was formerly used as a priory. The second, built in the 16th century, served as a convent and was home to the Sisters of the Congregation of Our Lady of Calvary until the 20th century.

In the heart of the village, you’ll find houses lined up like a cascade of brown rooftops, with light-coloured façades that lend a warm and inviting charm. At the centre stands the Church of Saint-Pierre, dating from the 18th century. It was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, following the destruction left by the Wars of Religion.
Castles and manor houses adorn the corners of the village. Notable examples include the Château du Peyruse, built on the site of Autoire’s original fortress, the Castle of Limargue, and the Laroque Delpat manor.

The Autoire Waterfall
Beyond its beautiful village with medieval houses, Autoire’s charm also lies in its exceptional natural surroundings, a limestone cliff cirque and a stunning waterfall. Located 2 kilometres from the village, the waterfall carves its way through the rocks and vegetation of the Dordogne Valley before plunging in a dramatic 30-metre drop.

The spectacle offered by the waterfall is truly impressive. And it’s even more beautiful in autumn or winter, just after a few days of rain. During summer, the magic fades slightly, as the waterfall becomes little more than a trickle.
Still, the experience wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the English Fortress.

You can reach this semi-troglodytic fortress, known as the “Château des Anglais” or Roque d’Autoire, from the village of Siran. This “Château des Anglais” dates back to the 13th century and is known for having served as a hideout for English troops during the Hundred Years’ War.
